Meet Hannah Sider
Meet Hannah Sider, the NYC-based photographer and director behind our Holiday 2020 campaign
Tell us about yourself
I’m Hannah Sider, I’m a photographer and director. I moved to NYC almost 9 years ago from Toronto.

When and how did you get into photography?
I got my first camera when I was 12 but I have been practicing photography as a hobby for my whole life. It wasn’t until I was maybe 18 that someone asked me to take photos of something for them and paid me for my photography. Up until that moment, I never thought about making money from my hobby.

Where do your main influences and inspiration come from?
I’m inspired by traveling and I’m also very inspired by NYC. I also often get inspiration from people and their stories.

Tell us about the concept of the Holiday 2020 campaign.
The concept of the holiday campaign is a group of girls out at night in these empty cities. They’re running around as though the city is their playground.

How were you able to capture authentic moments of the crews on their Holiday “journey”?
The casting is always really important, I wanted girls who naturally get along and like to have fun. We also provided them with some fun props like sparklers, polaroid cameras, etc.

How is this Holiday season different for you?
This holiday, I will have to see a lot of family virtually and it will likely be the first holiday that I’m in NYC.

What inspired you most in each city?
In NYC, I was inspired by the pier and the more industrial area; in LA I was inspired by the beach, palm trees and lights of Hollywood; and in Toronto, both squares we shot in are brightly lit and I liked how that looked at night.

What is your creative process before shoots?
Before shoots I always try to find as many visual references as possible, and I like to look at the locations to build the story.

What are you most excited about for 2021?
I'm excited for all the creative hobbies that I’ve started getting more into this year and will continue into next year. I’ve been doing a lot of painting and gardening.

What is something you’re most proud of?
I’m most proud that I’ve reached a point in my career where I’m always working with my friends and can bring friends on my jobs. Being able to not only have a job that you love, but getting to make money with people that you love is something I always dreamed about.

How important is it to stay authentic and true to yourself in this industry?
I think that it’s super important - otherwise you’ll lose yourself. Don’t be afraid of your own ideas and abilities.

What’s next for Hannah Sider?
I’m working on a book with my friend which we want to release in December.
